Master's by Research in Volcanic Ash Forecast Interpretation

Lancaster University Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University
Research (MRes / MPhil) ✓ Funding Available

Join a funded Master's by Research project investigating how users interpret volcanic ash forecasts. Collaborate with experts from Lancaster University and the Met Office while developing qualitative research skills through surveys and interviews.

Programme Overview

This Master's by Research programme focuses on understanding how users interpret volcanic ash forecasts generated by volcanic eruptions, specifically addressing challenges in visualisation and communication of large datasets from Volcanic Ash Advisory Centres globally. Students work alongside internationally respected academics and Met Office experts as part of a dynamic research group. The research project involves qualitative research methods such as surveys and semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders and end users including the aviation industry, meteorologists, and scientists. Students will analyze how the format and presentation of volcanic ash data influence interpretation and decision-making. No prior volcanology knowledge is required, though a social science background and experience in qualitative research are encouraged. Career Opportunities Graduates will gain skills in qualitative research and stakeholder engagement, preparing them for careers in meteorology, environmental consultancy, research institutions, and governmental agencies involved in disaster risk management and science communication. This funded research opportunity provides full studentship support including UK tuition fees and a stipend, with collaboration from the Met Office’s London VAAC. It offers unique exposure to interdisciplinary research and practical experience addressing real-world hazards connected to volcanic ash forecasting.

Entry Requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have a UK Honours degree (2:1 or above) or equivalent in a relevant subject area. Experience through non-traditional routes is also considered. Candidates with social science backgrounds and experience in qualitative or participatory research methods are encouraged to apply. English language proficiency evidence is required if offered a funded place.
