MSc Urban Wildlife Health and Zoonoses
Join a fully funded MSc programme focusing on disease ecology and zoonoses in urban wildlife, specifically white-tailed prairie hares, starting Fall 2026 at the University of Calgary. Investigate infectious diseases, pathology, and zoonotic risks in a One Health framework.
Programme Overview
Programme Overview
An MSc student will join a research program in wildlife health, disease ecology, and zoonoses at the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The project focuses on non-traumatic mortality causes of urban white-tailed prairie hares, emphasizing infectious disease, pathology, and zoonotic risk. The successful applicant will conduct investigative pathology, infectious disease testing, and epidemiological modeling within a One Health framework.
What You Will Study
Students will characterize non-traumatic death causes in urban hares, identify demographic and physiological risk factors for disease, and assess tularemia prevalence and risk factors. This research contributes to wildlife health surveillance, conservation, and zoonotic risk assessment at the urban-wildlife interface.
Career Opportunities
Graduates are prepared for careers in wildlife health research, conservation decision-making, disease ecology, zoonotic disease assessment, and related fields within academic, governmental, and non-governmental organizations.
Why This Programme
This fully funded MSc offers training in investigative pathology, infectious disease testing, and epidemiological modeling with mentorship from experts at UCVM. The collaborative environment includes graduate and DVM students, fostering interdisciplinary skills in wildlife health and disease research.
