Project Description

This fully funded PhD scholarship at Maynooth University is open to a suitable candidate intending to begin in September 2026. The project is based in the Department of Physics and will focus on condensed matter theory and quantum information science under the supervision of Dr Joshuah Heath. The newly established Heath Group will work on questions in: • quantum materials • quantum simulatability • quantum technology Possible research topics include: • many-body signatures of quantum spin liquids in magnonic transport • error-correction capabilities of many-body phases of matter • stability of topological phases under open system dynamics • measurement-induced dynamics in fermionic quantum circuits The exact research programme may be adjusted based on the student’s interests and technical background.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must hold a relevant 1st class or 2.1 honours degree (or equivalent) or a Master's in physics by September 2026. Priority is given to candidates with at least one arXiv paper in a relevant field. Experience in Python, Julia, and/or C/C++ coding is expected. Applicants must meet Maynooth University's minimum English language requirements.
