A fully funded 3.5-year PhD at UCL investigating steel recycling, scrap quality, and recycling technologies to improve electric arc furnace steelmaking in UK, US, and EU contexts.

Project Description

This project addresses sustainable manufacturing and emissions reduction in the global steel industry. The PhD focuses on: Technical analysis of recycling technologies and scrap classification Dynamic stock-flow modelling of end-of-life steel using material flow analysis Sectoral material flow models across infrastructure, construction, automotive, and other industries The research contributes to low-carbon industrial infrastructure and SDGs 9 & 12. Methods may include quantitative modelling, Python/R/MATLAB/GIS tools, life cycle assessment, and material flow analysis.

Entry Requirements

Strong degree in engineering, environmental science, industrial ecology, materials science, or quantitative discipline
Experience or interest in material flow analysis, life cycle assessment, or systems modelling
Proficiency in quantitative methods and programming
Excellent English communication skills
Prior industry experience is an asset but not required
