Project Description

This joint PhD scholarship between the University of Sydney and the University of Glasgow investigates how eighteenth-century readers actively engaged with print. The project focuses on archival materials such as annotated books, manuscripts, scrapbooks, and commonplace books to analyze reading as a creative and material practice. It explores how readers contributed to knowledge production through annotation, compilation, and reuse of texts. The program involves study across both institutions, with research conducted in Sydney and Glasgow, providing access to extensive archival collections and specialized expertise in literary and historical studies.

Entry Requirements

First Class Honors degree or Master’s by Research with strong results (or equivalent)
• Completion of a substantial research thesis (~20,000 words)
• Demonstrated interest in eighteenth-century studies or related field
• Ability to study full-time and undertake research across both institutions
