Fully funded PhD at Loughborough University developing carbon accounting frameworks and optimisation strategies for pipeline industries. Combines life cycle assessment, data analytics, and modelling to reduce emissions and support net-zero infrastructure.

Project Description

This PhD project at Loughborough University focuses on developing advanced carbon accounting and optimisation strategies for pipeline industries, which play a critical role in water, energy, and transport infrastructure but remain highly carbon-intensive. The research will design a comprehensive life cycle carbon accounting framework that captures Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. It will integrate life cycle assessment (LCA), real-time data analytics, and optimisation modelling to support decision-making across the full product lifecycle—from raw material extraction to end-of-life. Co-funded by the Pipeline Industries Guild, the project offers direct collaboration with industry partners and access to real-world datasets. The outcomes will support measurable carbon reduction, improved ESG reporting, and compliance with evolving sustainability regulations. This interdisciplinary project provides training in advanced LCA methods, optimisation techniques, and data-driven decision tools, with strong opportunities for publication, industry engagement, and policy impact.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have:
A first-class or high 2:1 undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline
Strong analytical and quantitative skills
Interest in sustainability, carbon reduction, and infrastructure systems
Knowledge of life cycle assessment (LCA) or carbon accounting (desirable)
Ability to work with data, modelling tools, or spreadsheets
A Master’s degree or relevant industry experience is advantageous.
