Fully funded AHRC CDP PhD examining the dispersal and historical significance of the Cotton manuscript collection.
Project Description
This project explores the dispersal of the Cotton collection, one of the most significant manuscript collections in British history, originally assembled by Sir Robert Cotton.
The research will investigate how and why manuscripts were dispersed, examining collecting practices, networks of users, and the historical role of the library across the seventeenth century. It will also analyse scholarly, political, and cultural influences shaping the collection’s use and transformation.
The student will work with both the University of Birmingham and the British Library, gaining access to extensive archival resources and collaborative research training.
