Funded PhD at the University of Glasgow developing isotopic techniques to characterise saline groundwaters for nuclear waste disposal and hydrogeological modelling.

Project Description

This PhD project focuses on developing an isotope-based toolkit to characterise saline groundwaters relevant to the UK’s planned Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) for nuclear waste. The research aims to determine groundwater age, origin, and mixing processes using chemical and isotopic techniques. The project will involve analysis of groundwater chemistry, oxygen-hydrogen isotopes, and development of methods for chlorine isotopes (37Cl/35Cl) and radionuclide 36Cl. Key activities include: Laboratory-based geochemical and isotopic analysis Development of stable and radioactive isotope measurement techniques Testing hydrogeological models of deep saline groundwater systems Field sampling campaigns and collaboration with European laboratories The project is based at the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC) and includes collaboration with Nuclear Waste Services. The student will benefit from interdisciplinary training and industry engagement.
