Fully funded WGSSS ESRC PhD at Cardiff University developing AI-enabled decision-support tools to improve NHS waiting list management using data science and operational research.

Project Description

This PhD studentship at Cardiff Business School focuses on developing AI-enhanced decision-support systems to improve elective care waiting list management within the NHS. The research will examine how uncertainty, operational constraints, and decision-making processes affect waiting list performance. It will integrate qualitative insights from healthcare professionals with quantitative modelling approaches, including fuzzy logic and AI-based systems, to design interpretable decision-support tools. The project adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining interviews, focus groups, and data-driven modelling. It will evaluate system performance improvements such as reduced waiting times and enhanced resource utilization, alongside user trust and usability of AI-supported decisions. The research is conducted in collaboration with NHS partners and aims to produce scalable solutions applicable across healthcare systems.
