This EPSRC-funded PhD will explore 2D transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) nanoelectronic devices for energy-efficient neuromorphic computing, combining nanofabrication, device physics, and advanced materials characterisation in a collaborative environment.

Project Description

The project focuses on TMDC semiconductors to build transistors and memristive devices for neuromorphic architectures inspired by biological neural systems. Research will involve fabrication, characterisation, and optimisation of TMDC-based devices, studying properties such as synaptic plasticity, threshold switching, and memristive behaviour. Students will gain experience in nanofabrication, electronic device measurement, and advanced materials characterisation, working across chemistry, physics, and electronic engineering disciplines. The project offers access to state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities, interdisciplinary training within the EPSRC EXPRESS consortium, and opportunities to present research internationally and engage with academic and industrial partners.

Entry Requirements

UK 2:1 honours degree (or international equivalent) in electronic engineering, physics, materials science, or closely related discipline.
Strong interest in nanoelectronics, semiconductor devices, or emerging computing technologies.
