Competition funded PhD at Monash University Malaysia focused on airborne antimicrobial resistance gene surveillance using metagenomics, environmental data, and machine learning.

Project Description

This PhD project investigates airborne environmental resistance genes in Asia by establishing a network of air sampling stations across the Klang Valley. The research will use high-throughput metagenomic sequencing to map the aerobiome and identify the diversity and concentration of airborne antimicrobial resistance genes. The project includes: Air sampling station deployment across selected locations Metagenomic sequencing of airborne microbial communities Analysis of airborne AMR gene diversity and concentration Integration of meteorological and PM2.5 data Geospatial analysis of proximity to high-risk sources such as hospitals and wastewater plants Development of machine learning models to predict airborne AMR distribution This project combines microbiology, environmental surveillance, bioinformatics, and predictive modelling to improve understanding of airborne antimicrobial resistance.
